McQuisten to visit voters in Christmas Valley

Kerry McQuisten, Oregon gubernatorial candidate for the Republican party, will be holding a town hall to meet voters in Christmas Valley on Saturday, March 5 at 5 p.m. at the Christmas Valley Boosters building.

This will be the second visit McQuisten has made to Lake County in her quest to win the Republican nomination for governor in the May primary. She visited voters in Lakeview in October 2021. The winner of the Republican primary will face the winner of the Democratic primary — along with independent candidate Betsy Johnson — to become the next governor of Oregon as Oregon Gov. Kate Brown is being termed out.

McQuisten grew up on a ranch in the Baker City area and is a seventh-generation Oregonian. After college she held a variety of marketing and publishing jobs in Japan and the Seattle, Wash., area before moving back to her hometown of Baker City and starting Black Lyon Publishing LLC.

She was elected to the Baker City Council in 2020 and was chosen by the Council to be mayor. She gained the attention of national news organizations and outlets when she led the Baker City Council in passing a resolution in early 2020 condemning Brown’s COVID restrictions and mandates. McQuisten was interviewed by national cable news channels, radio stations and media outlets. She said a number of individuals began asking her to run for the Republican nomination.

“I would not have entered this race if I did not think I would not have a chance to win,” said McQuisten. “I have run the numbers and if I get the people of the Second Congressional District to come out and vote for me then I stand a good chance of winning.”

She said during her travels she has met a number of Republicans, libertarians, and moderate voters who are fed up and frustrated with the current political makeup in Salem. One of the main concerns she has been hearing is many people feel their voices are not heard and their votes do not matter.

Even with a crowded Republican field in the primary — 16 candidates have declared their candidacy — McQuisten feels confident she can stand out from the crowd.

“I am the only candidate that was born and raised in Oregon. I am the only candidate who is a lifelong Republican. And I am the only candidate that is not a serial candidate for governor,” said McQusiten.

As of press time there are 16 candidates running in the Republican primary: McQuisten, Bridget Barton, David Burch, Reed Christensen, Christine Drazan, Jessica Gomez, Nick Hess, Tim McCloud, Brandon Merritt, Bud Pierce, John Presco, Stan Pulliam, Amber Richardson, Bill Sizemore, Stefan Strek and Marc Thielman.

The Christmas Valley Boosters building is located at 86962 Aspen Lane, Christmas Valley.

The primary is Tuesday, May 17.
